During nov 2004 & jan 2005 Bristol Silent’s member James Harrison shot the following documentary film. It tells the story of how accapella vocal group The Matinee Idles formed for a performance at the festival’s opening gala. The group comprising of members of the band Darts and Paul McGann are seen in rehearsal and during the performance. Both The Matinee Idles & Paul McGann are huge admirers of silent comedy so it seemed like a good idea to try something completely radical by accompanying slapstick comedy with an a cappella doowop band.
We think it worked really well too. The final few minutes of the second video will give you an opportunity to judge for yourselves!
We would have preferred to have just uploaded it as one video but sadly Youtube’s restrictions meant we had to slice the footage in half. So forgive the somewhat clumsy editing between the two clips. I imagine James (who shot the film) would prefer it if I point out that he had nothing to do with this last tiny bit of editing!
With the Matinee Idles poised to return to Bristol to accompany more silent comedy onscreen in 2012 this is a timely reminder of where it began, all those years ago…..
