Sykes
at 80: A Celebration
Sun 7 December, 3pm
Bristol Silents are honoured to welcome Eric
Sykes, one of the
legendary names in British comedy, to talk about his films.
He will look back on his work as a writer and director of
comedy shorts and has chosen clips from his own ‘silent’
comedies along with extracts of his comedy heroes.
This will be followed by a Q&A
session. A rare opportunity to see this great comic talking
about his own work. Plus a screening of:
The Plank
Dir: Eric Sykes UK 1967 45mins
Cast: Tommy Cooper, Eric Sykes, Jimmy Edwards
Sykes explores the visual side of humour to great effect in
The Plank, which he wrote (and also directed) almost entirely
without dialogue. The premise sees Sykes and Cooper needing
one plank of wood to complete a floor but then getting into
scrapes galore when transporting said lumber from timber yard
to building site. Along the way a galaxy of TV stars aid or
obstruct their cause. |

Eric
Sykes Double Bill
Sun 21 December
Mr H is Late
Dir: Eric Sykes UK 1987 28mins
Cast: Spike Milligan, Freddie Starr, Roy Kinnear
Sykes is in charge of a team of undertakers moving a coffin
from a home to the church. The home is on the 26th floor of
a skyscraper; the stairs are narrow; the lift is small and
prone to breaking down. Chaos ensues.
It's Your Move
Dir: Eric Sykes UK 1969 27mins
Cast: Tommy Cooper, Richard Briers, Jimmy Edwards
A classic 'Sykes Silent' packed with classic comedy and great
British comedians. A newly married couple move into their
first house, then the removal men (led by Sykes) arrive, bringing
the house and the whole street into chaos. |
