As we mentioned in the our last post, August is very much about German Silent Film and we finish the month with one of the true legends of the Silent Film canon, Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari (1920).
But unlike those every other day screenings of Caligari (and there does seem quite a lot out there) these particular screenings which are scheduled to be screened at Watershed between Friday 29th and Thursday 8th September (Full listings can be found here) are something very special. As this brand new release is the brand new ‘definitive’ restoration of Caligari by the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau-Stiftung and released via Eureka Entertaiment’s The Masters of Cinema Series (It’s worth checking out their brand new website by the way).
Some of us at Bristol Silents were lucky enough to see this new restoration earlier on this year at The International Berlin Film Festival and most recently at Il Cineteca di Bologna and we were all blown away about how incredible this new restored version is and how much the restoration breathes new life into the film.
We will take a look at the importance of the restoration in our next post, but we thought we would start this week with a chance to win 2 tickets to see the definitive restoration of Caligari at the Watershed. Full listings for the screenings can be found on the Watershed website.
